The Henderson City Council has unanimously voted to officially censure Councilwoman Carrie Cox, who faces allegations of serious misconduct. According to a report by 8 News Now, the vote, which passed with a 4-0 margin, strips Cox of her participation on regional boards and restricts her communications with city staff, following a grand jury indictment on a charge of unlawfully monitoring or attempting to monitor a private conversation.
The allegations against Cox are not limited simply to eavesdropping. She has been accused of using her position to help acquaintances in legal trouble and of running an unlicensed daycare. These revelations surfaced after the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department investigated and found evidence in Cox's iCloud that appears to corroborate some of the claims. Amid the controversy, the city opted to swiftly formalize its disapproval, voting on the censure just one day before Cox is expected to appear in court. Henderson Councilwoman Monica Larson remarked, “Everything Carrie has stated was a blatant and intentional lie about the mayor and the council to damage the city,” in a statement obtained by 8 News Now. Larson further commented that police found evidence of Cox's corruption over a 10-month investigative period.
This censure is notably significant; while it does not remove Cox from her council seat or the 2026 ballot, it serves as a public reprimand and a mark against her professional conduct. Cox's lawyer, Josh Tomsheck, questioned the council's authority to hold a censure vote so close to her court appearance, saying, “A ‘censure resolution’ like the one here is not something that has ever occurred in the context of a city council meeting in the city of Henderson, or virtually anywhere else in the state of Nevada that I can identify,” as told to the council and cited by 8 News Now.
Further investigations into Cox's activities revealed additional potential misconduct, including accusations of her having tampered with disciplinary actions and possibly "preventing an officer from attending the FBI Academy at the request of a contact," as revealed in a report by News 3 Las Vegas. There's also a claim that she improperly recorded a conversation involving Larson and two others without consent, sneaking a device behind a curtain at Henderson City Hall. Tomsheck defended his client, affirming, “There is much more that will come to light throughout this process, and Mrs. Cox very much looks forward to addressing these allegations through the appropriate channels in Court,” as per a statement shared by News 3 Las Vegas.
As Cox prepares for her court appearance, the censure resolution from the city indicates the matter may be referred to additional "appropriate investigative and prosecutorial agencies," as noted by News 3 Las Vegas.
