Highlands Ranch community members and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office gathered this week to pay tribute to a young hero. A memorial dedicated to Kendrick Castillo now stands seven feet tall in Civic Green Park, a testament to his bravery during the STEM School Highlands Ranch tragedy. Kendrick, remembered for his courageous actions on that fateful day, is honored in stone and sentiment as a symbol of selflessness and compassion.
During the ceremony, Undersheriff Jason Kennedy represented the Sheriff’s Office and reflected on the impact of Kendrick’s valor. "It is an incredible honor to stand here today, on behalf of Sheriff Darren Weekly and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office as we dedicate this memorial to a young man whose courage continues to guide our work," Kennedy said, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. He emphasized the role of School Resource Officers as vital community members who foster safety and trust among students beyond crises.
Division Chief Joel White, among the first responders at the scene, also shared heartfelt remarks on Kendrick's significance. "Kendrick Castillo changed the world through his selfless act, giving his life to save others," White told the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. In conversations with Kendrick’s parents, White noted Kendrick's inherent generosity and courage as reflections of the nurturing love from his family.
