In a severe incident on Monday night, several horses narrowly escaped a massive barn fire in East Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland County. The blaze broke out around 5:30 p.m. at the Regency Horse Ranch, as reported by CBS News. East Huntingdon Fire Chief Brian Kite confirmed that the barn was fully engaged upon firefighters' arrival, yet miraculously, all the animals were safely evacuated by the property's residents and farmhands before the crew's arrival.
Highlighting the difficulties faced during the operation, Kite mentioned, "This thing was wind driven. A lot of heavy wind that intensified the fire," in a statement detailed by CBS News Pittsburgh. While battling the inferno, the firefighters had to contend with strong winds that complicated their efforts. According to a TribLIVE report, water was sourced from a lake on the property and a distant fire hydrant to douse the flames. One firefighter sustained a hand injury during the ordeal.
Residents, including Bryan Boken, who has been living on the farm for eight years, were deeply concerned about the well-being of the horses, which he described as being very close to his heart in an interview with CBS News. Investigations into the cause of the barn fire continue as the Regency Horse Ranch looks towards recovery and rebuilding.
