A train derailed around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday in Houston’s East End near Hughes Street and Harrisburg Boulevard, prompting a partial evacuation of a nearby apartment complex. No injuries were reported, and officials said about eight empty rail cars were involved with no chemical leaks, according to Click2Houston.
Streets around South 66th Street and Rusk Street were closed after several cars were seen off the tracks or leaning. The Houston Fire Department said the process of righting the rail cars could take 12 to 14 hours and may last into the evening.
The Houston Fire Department told residents to stay away from the area after a train derailed in the East End. A nearby apartment complex was evacuated as a precaution.
