Houston has the most congested roads in Texas. The West Loop from I-10 (Katy Freeway) to US 59 (Southwest Freeway) is the busiest for the third year in a row. Seven of the top ten congested road segments in Texas are in Houston, including US 59 from SH 288 to I-10 and from West Loop to SH 288 (South Freeway). Traffic delays cost drivers time and millions of dollars each year, according to KHOU.
Houston’s Eastex Fwy/I-69/U.S. 59 in Harris County saw the most delays in 2024, totaling over 1.6 million hours, while Dallas County’s Woodall Rodgers Freeway/State Highway Spur 66 added nearly 1.4 million hours of delay, as reported by Spectrum Local News. Overall, Texas drivers faced more than 523 million hours of traffic delays, though Houston has seen fewer of its road segments listed among the state’s 100 most congested since 2019.
The high congestion costs billions of dollars and wastes large amounts of fuel, affecting major metros like Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, and San Antonio. TxDOT attributes the delays to factors including economic activity, land use, construction, off-peak congestion, and weather, with DFW and Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land areas holding 41 and 36 of the state’s most congested roads, respectively.
