Overnight burglars tore through a stretch of Hyde Park’s business district, hitting five storefronts in a few pre-dawn hours along East 55th and East 56th streets, Chicago police said Tuesday.

All the targets were clustered in the 1600 blocks, and in each case the front door took the brunt of the damage. Police said there were no immediate arrests.

According to ABC7 Chicago, three of the break-ins happened between 2 and 3 a.m. in the 1600 block of East 55th Street. A fourth unfolded around 3 a.m. in the 1600 block of East 56th Street, and a fifth was reported at about 5:07 a.m.

Police told the outlet that in each case, suspects broke or damaged the front doors before taking off. Property was reported stolen in the East 56th Street incident. Area One detectives are handling the investigation.

Neighborhood context

The overnight spree lands in a neighborhood that has already seen more than its share of police alerts this year. Hyde Park has been the focus of multiple Chicago Police Department bulletins, from a summer run of antisemitic stickers and graffiti to patterns of robberies and burglaries around the 51st to 55th commercial corridor.

FOX 32 Chicago reported that police urged residents and business owners to hang on to surveillance footage and call in anything that looks off. Local outlets have also detailed robbery and burglary patterns in the area. As CBS Chicago previously noted, anyone with tips or video is asked to contact Area One detectives at 312-747-8380 or submit an anonymous tip at CPDTIP.com.

What the police are asking

"No one is in custody," police told ABC7 Chicago, as detectives continue to piece together what happened.

Investigators say the small details matter. Preserved surveillance clips, clear time stamps, and any eyewitness video from around the time of the break-ins could help them track the suspects’ movements along the business corridor and develop leads.
