U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has launched social media ads aimed at New York City police officers, highlighting respect and appreciation for law enforcement—a move some see as a critique of the NYPD’s current administration. The ads read, “Join an agency that respects you, your family and your commitment to serving in law enforcement,” as reported by Gothamist. The campaign comes as the NYPD faces staffing challenges, with nearly 1,300 vacancies and new efforts to recruit officers through lowered education requirements and expanded hiring plans.
ICE is offering benefits such as up to $50,000 in signing bonuses and $60,000 in student loan repayment, but NYPD officers can earn over $200,000 with overtime, according to Gothamist. The political climate may also affect recruitment, following the election of Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, who has previously criticized NYPD operations and culture. His election is expected to influence the relationship between City Hall and the police department.
ICE’s recruitment drive coincides with the recent election of Mayor-elect Mamdani and follows former President Donald Trump’s criticism of him, as per New York Magazine. This continues efforts from the Trump administration to recruit law enforcement from sanctuary cities into federal agencies, a strategy observed in several U.S. cities in recent years.
Gothamist reported that Murad Awawdeh, president and CEO of the New York Immigration Coalition, called the ads “divisive,” saying the strategy is intended to create division among officers. He added, “No New Yorker committed to public safety would ever consider joining a rogue, unaccountable agency that terrorizes New York communities.”
Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Benevolent Association, told Gothamist that city leaders need to address issues such as overwork, low pay, and criticism of officers, noting that staffing challenges could worsen if these matters are not addressed.
