In Chicago's Pullman neighborhood, a new affordable housing option for seniors has just been unveiled. The Imani Village Senior Residence, a development that adds 70 affordable homes to the area, celebrated its ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor Brandon Johnson, Alderwoman Michelle Harris, and other community leaders. According to a city press release, Mayor Johnson emphasized the importance of providing not only stable but also dignified and secure housing for seniors. Aimed to address the needs of the local aging population, the project reinforces the city's broader initiative to expand accessible housing opportunities.

The Imani Village Senior Residence, strategically set at 9621 S. Cottage Grove Ave, includes 60 one-bedroom and 10 two-bedroom units with rents tailored to be affordable to various income levels. To quickly access the downtown amenities, residents can utilize the nearby 95th/Dan Ryan Red Line station. The development is part of the larger Imani Village plan designed by Trinity United Church of Christ, which centers on creating a sustainable urban community over a 23-acre site. Besides housing, residents will also benefit from local partnerships providing comprehensive support to help seniors remain active in the community, according to DOH Commissioner Lissette Castañeda's statement obtained by the press release.

The construction phase of the Senior Residence project not only met but also exceeded the City's goals for workforce and subcontractor inclusivity. Creating 149 construction jobs, the development also established an eco-friendly footprint by adhering to the requirements of the Enterprise Green Certification, noted Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, Senior Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ, as reported in the press release. The facility is equipped to spark community engagement with common areas designed to enhance social connections among residents.

With the completion of the Imani Village Senior Residence project, Mayor Brandon Johnson continues to firmly pursue his mission to make Chicago more affordable for working people through the Build Better Together initiative and Green Social Housing ordinance. Supported by a $1.25 billion Housing and Economic Development Bond, this initiative aims to actively generate mixed-income housing development across Chicago. This project in Pullman is just one example of the city’s efforts to address the housing needs of its citizens, establishing a model for community-driven investment and sustainable development as it looks towards the future, Mayor Johnson told the press release.
