As temperatures dropped, District 1 Patrol Officer James Kahre came across an elderly man in trouble during a routine patrol. The Jax Sheriff’s Office reported in a social media post that the man, a Vietnam veteran, was confused, thinking he was in Savannah, and had parked his car the wrong way at an intersection with almost no fuel left.

With about half an hour left in his shift, Officer Kahre took action to help the man. He kept the veteran warm in the patrol car. Officer Kahre was able to contact the man’s wife, who was preparing to report him missing, and informed her that her husband was safe and on his way home.

"Officer Kahre's supervisor commended his compassion and attention to detail, noting that while it would’ve been easy to drive past the stopped vehicle, Officer Kahre chose instead to stay late and help a Vietnam Veteran find his way home," the Jax Sheriff's Office stated in a social media post.
