A violent altercation that included a shooting and stabbing last Saturday morning has left three people hospitalized and one man charged. The chaos unfolded at around 2:15 a.m. near the Mayor Wright Homes in Kalihi. As reported by KITV, a 13-year-old boy and a 27-year-old man were shot as they entered the area, while a 25-year-old male security guard who observed the event was subsequently stabbed.
Following the incident, all victims were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. Conversely, the man accused of the stabbing, identified as 31-year-old Michael Cyrus, has been charged with second-degree assault and is being held on $100,000 bail. Initially, police considered a charge of attempted second-degree murder, but this was downgraded after consultation with the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney. Details about the alteration in charges were obtained by Hawaii News Now.
Cyrus was apprehended after fleeing the scene on foot, and the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney decided to pursue charges of Assault 2nd. Specific motives behind the violence have yet to be publicly disclosed, but the severity and randomness of the crimes have rattled the community.
KITV reported the teen was hit in the ankles, and the 27-year-old adult victim suffered a shoulder gunshot wound. The security guard sustained a stab wound in the same area during the incident. Information about their conditions has not been updated since they were admitted to hospital. Authorities are appealing for anyone with information to step forward and are urging the public to contact 911 or CrimeStoppers at (808) 955-8300.
