In an effort to promote sustainable water usage and improve sanitation standards, the Kauaʻi Department of Water is observing World Toilet Day this November 19. The department is addressing a critical issue: billions of individuals across our globe face the perils of inadequate sanitation. As reported by the Kauaʻi government's official website, 3.4 billion people lack access to safely managed sanitation, while 354 million people continue the hazardous practice of open defecation. To increase awareness and encourage change, DOW is conducting a giveaway of WaterSense-labeled toilets, which are designed to use less water and maintain high efficiency.
WaterSense, an initiative by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, endorses products that conserve water without sacrificing performance. "Toilets manufactured before 1980 typically use an average of five gallons per flush (gpf), while WaterSense-labeled toilets use 1.28 gpf," as stated by the Kauaʻi government's website. "This is 20 percent less than the current federal standard of 1.6 gpf." By switching to these more efficient models, households can significantly cut their water use, resulting in both environmental and economic benefits.
In celebration of World Toilet Day, the grand prize of the DOW's drawing includes three WaterSense-labeled toilets, each awarded to a different winner. Eligible participants include Kauaʻi households, businesses, schools, and organizations provided they meet the requirements set by DOW. Contest hopefuls may submit their entries at the DOW business office lobby during business hours throughout November, with a stipulation: one entry per household or entity is enforced. The drawing to determine the winners will take place on December 1.
Entrants must be at least 19 years old, and they have the responsibility to arrange for the pickup and delivery of their potential prize. Those on the island of Kauaʻi keen on securing one of these water-efficient toilets, or simply wanting more info about the initiative, should reach out to the DOW. The department maintains weekday office hours, excluding holidays, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Individuals may contact DOW at 808-245-5461 or drop an email at [email protected] for further assistance.
