Kīhei has a new peach-colored food truck that is quietly turning evening strolls and beach days into soft-serve pit stops. Reef’s Real Fruit Ice Cream is serving New Zealand-style real fruit ice cream - made-to-order soft serve blended with real frozen fruit and simple toppings - and the bright mural plus build-your-own combos are already pulling in both locals and visitors.
How it’s made
New Zealand-style "real fruit" ice cream is whipped to order by blending frozen fruit into a soft-serve base, which keeps the flavor bright and the color natural. As Tripadvisor notes, Reef’s uses machines imported from New Zealand and lets customers pick a vanilla or nondairy coconut base and up to three fruits to swirl in. That hands-on process - not syrup or artificial flavoring - is what fans say makes the dessert stand out.
From Kiwi inspiration to Kīhei
Owners Abby Alvin and Connor McCormack opened Reef’s Real Fruit Ice Cream on Nov. 22, 2024, and told HAWAIʻI Magazine they served more than 200 customers on opening day. Alvin said the idea came after a trip to New Zealand, where she made it a mission to sample the dessert all over the country. The HAWAIʻI Magazine piece even called Reef’s the only place on Maui serving this style of ice cream.
Where it fits on Maui
Island options for real-fruit swirls are starting to multiply. Soulberry Ice-Cream, an Upcountry Makawao trailer, explicitly markets New Zealand-style real-fruit swirls, so dessert hunters can find similar techniques beyond Kīhei; see Soulberry on Maui Food Trucks. Reef’s has also picked up a raft of positive feedback on local review sites, including Tripadvisor, which helps explain the lines some nights.
What to try
Customers choose a coconut or vanilla base and then pick fruits such as strawberries, blackberries, mango, and pineapple; toppings include graham crackers and granola, according to HAWAIʻI Magazine. The owners say they source ice cream from local businesses and incorporate seasonals like dragon fruit and lilikoʻi when available. That focus on local fruit and simple toppings is a big part of the truck’s appeal to island residents.
Whether you call it Kiwi-style or simply a fruity soft serve, Reef’s Real Fruit Ice Cream has added a bright, seasonal option to Kīhei’s dessert map. And if the line is a little longer than you hoped, other Maui trailers are beginning to offer similar swirls, which means the island’s small-batch ice-cream scene is only getting sweeter.
