Residents and travelers in the Kīlauea area should expect detours starting Monday as the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) begins permanent striping of the Kīlauea Roundabout. The Kolo Road access to Kūhiō Highway will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., affecting weekday traffic flow until December 12. HDOT announced the schedule in an effort to minimize disruption during peak travel times.
According to the notice, Kīlauea Town residents can use alternate routes via Pili Road and Hoʻokuʻi Road during work hours. The closure is for worker safety while final striping is applied to the roundabout.
The roundabout project aims to improve traffic flow and safety at a key Kīlauea intersection. HDOT advises drivers to allow extra travel time and watch for temporary traffic patterns during the work.
