In an effort to make the voting process as accessible as possible, LA Metro will not charge passengers for rides on Election Day, providing complimentary transportation across all its services. The fare-free period extends from the early hours of November 4 at 4 a.m. until the winding-down hours of November 5 at 3 a.m., as reported by City News Service.
This move comes as part of a bid to encourage voter turnout for Proposition 50, the temporary redistricting measure on the ballot. Riders can utilize various transit options such as Metro buses, trains, bike shares, and the Micro ride-share service to reach polling stations or ballot drop-boxes. According to a statement obtained by City News Service, "Metro encourages all eligible county residents to exercise their constitutional right to vote." The organization underlines its commitment to removing barriers like transportation costs that might otherwise hinder residents from casting their ballots.
Those opting for Metro Bike Share on Election Day can avail of free 30-minute rides. To redeem this offer, customers can enter the code "110425" at kiosks, online, or through the Metro Bike Share app, although a credit or debit card is required for booking. It should be noted that additional fees for electric Metro Bikes could apply after the initial complimentary half hour. In a similar vein, the Metro Micro ride-share program, which serves short trips within various Los Angeles County zones, is also extending a gesture of accessibility by offering free rides with the promo code “Vote25." This information was detailed on Metro's Instagram post.
Beyond transportation, LA Metro is teaming up again with the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's Office to enhance voter access. Select Metro stations are equipped with vote-by-mail drop boxes. Some of the locations include Union Station, Harbor Gateway Transit Center, and Westlake/MacArthur Park stations. The Metro's headquarters at Union Station goes a step further by hosting a voting center open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day, making it even more convenient for residents to participate in democracy.
