Last week, a routine traffic stop escalated into a significant weapons seizure when Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies in Lancaster discovered an illegal AK-47 rifle in a driver’s vehicle, according to a report by KTLA. The deputies pulled over the vehicle for erratic driving, which led to the search that uncovered the short-barreled AK-47, loaded with armor-piercing rounds, a large amount of cash, and marijuana products among items believed to be linked to illegal distribution.
Detailing the operation, and a statement from the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station on their Facebook page noted that the deputies were part of the Lancaster Community Appreciation (LAN-CAP) team that specializes like in keeping the community safe and had to conduct a traffic stop for a driving infraction, only to reveal a fully automatic weapon that could penetrate body armor, which is a serious crime in California that includes the selling of drugs.
Neither the identity of the suspect nor specific charges were made public at the time of the reports; however, the Sheriff’s station underscored the potential danger averted by the deputies’ discovery, and the serious legal consequences implied by the possession of this type of firearm and ammunition. The implications of finding such a weapon are significant, especially since California law strictly prohibits ownership of fully automatic firearms and armor-piercing ammunition without specific authorization, the discovery putting a spotlight on the ongoing challenge law enforcement officials face in curbing illegal firearms and drug trafficking.
The seized items including the customized AK-47 and the colorful boxes of marijuana products, were displayed in a photo uploaded by the Sheriff’s station, with officials praising the diligence of the deputies "Lancaster station deputies work hard daily keeping the community safe," as the efforts of local law enforcement in addressing these illegal endeavors did not go unnoticed their commitment to combat the illicit weapons and drugs that pose a threat to the safety and well-being of the community at large.
