An early morning traffic stop in Berthoud turned critical when a Larimer County Sheriff’s Office deputy was involved in a shooting, following a high-speed chase. According to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred early this morning, around 2:32 a.m. near Grand Market Avenue and TPC Parkway.
The situation escalated as the suspect, driving a vehicle, refused to stop and led the deputy on a chase that ended on Highway 60 just east of I-25. Authorities report that the deputy performed a PIT maneuver, which is designed to safely stop a fleeing vehicle. However, the suspect allegedly attempted to quickly accelerate towards the deputy, prompting the deputy to discharge his service weapon to effectively neutralize the perceived threat.
Both the deputy and the suspect sustained minor injuries during the incident. The deputy was treated and released from a local hospital, while the suspect received treatment before being taken into custody. Further details reveal that there was an adult passenger present in the suspect's vehicle who remained unharmed throughout the ordeal.
In response to the situation, the Eighth Judicial Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) was activated to conduct a thorough investigation. "CIRT was activated and responded to take over the officer-involved shooting investigation," the Larimer County Sheriff's Office detailed. The lead agency in charge of the ongoing investigation is Fort Collins Police Services, and they are expected to soon release additional information concerning the incident and any related charges.
