The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office has recently announced a notification regarding the residency of a Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) within the community. As mandated by Colorado statutes, from November 7th through November 21st, the public can access information online about Andrew Michael Kaywood, the offender in question. This move aims not to hold a community meeting but to inform and enhance public safety and protection.
The legal framework does not allow the Sheriff's Office to dictate where a sex offender may or may not choose to live, provided that no court restrictions hinder their choice. Despite the community's concern, these individuals are constitutionally free to quickly move wherever they prefer. However, due to the Jacob Wetterling Act of 1994, law enforcement is required to notify the public, especially in cases involving Sexually Violent Predators, such as in the instance of Mr. Kaywood.
It is advised that the sensitive content provided by the Sheriff’s Office is not suitable for children. Parents are nonetheless urged to review the appropriate SVP information and public safety information with their children, ensuring they themselves have first fully understood the notification. This proactive measure ensures that families are well-informed while maintaining the sensitive nature of the content disclosed.
While the community's awareness is the priority, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that "vigilantism or use of this information to harass, threaten, or intimidate the offender, the offender’s significant others, or the community notification team is criminal behavior and will not be tolerated."
