During a concentrated one-hour traffic enforcement operation on Tuesday, the Las Cruces Police Department’s Traffic Unit had to actively write up 54 citations on U.S. Highway 70, according to the City of Las Cruces. The focus of the operation, which transpired during the morning rush from 8-9 a.m., was on speeding, lack of registration, and cases of uninsured motorists.
The breakdown of offenses, as detailed by the City of Las Cruces, included 26 citations for motorists exceeding the speed limit, a clear testament to the ongoing issue of speeding along this patch of highway. In addition to speeding, 14 drivers were cited for lacking proper registration, and 8 found themselves penalized for driving with no proof of insurance. Not to be overlooked, the operation also ensnared drivers with other violations, including five citations issued for those operating a vehicle without a driver’s license and one individual caught using a cell phone while driving.
The Las Cruces Police Department didn’t just suddenly decide to strictly enforce traffic laws on a whim. The operation, conducted near Rinconada Boulevard on the westbound side of Highway 70, was part of an initiative to enhance road safety and reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities. Such endeavors are increasingly common as local authorities aim to clamp down on dangerous driving behaviors that put all road users at risk.
