With Thanksgiving just around the corner, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Foundation has teamed up with several community partners to alleviate the difficulties that accompany food insecurity. The LVMPD Foundation, along with Naqvi Injury Law, Walmart, and others, have come together to provide 500 meals to families in need across the valley.
During the holiday season, financial burdens often loom large for many. In response, the LVMPD's Dream Program representative highlighted the significance of community collaboration in these efforts, telling News 3 Las Vegas, "We know that there's a lot of families out there that don't have this opportunity on their own." The program places its focus on the human side of the holiday equation, delivering not just food, but a message of solidarity and support.
Packing and distributing these meals, officers embarked on a mission far from their routine patrols. Each meal, brimming with traditional fare, from mashed potatoes to frozen turkeys, symbolizes a momentary relief for families experiencing hardships. "It's everything from mashed potatoes, green beans, mac and cheese, cornbread, all of the sides, and then a frozen turkey," explained Karen Marben, Executive Director for the LVMPD Foundation, in a statement obtained by 8 News Now.
Recognizing the deep-seated needs within their communities, this initiative reflects more than a desire to satiate hunger — it underscores a commitment to public service that extends beyond standard law enforcement duties. In a gesture that encompasses much more than handing out food, "If people are hungry, they’re probably going to be committing crimes, so we need to be out and help them," said Captain Jeff Clark, in charge of Metro’s Southeast Area Command, in an interview with 8 News Now. These meals became a conduit for a stronger, safer community narrative.
The impact of this collaborative effort extends to each recipient, touching lives like that of Marla Lee, mother of five. Grateful for the timely delivery, she told 8 News Now, "We’ll all be here enjoying this meal. It’s very nice considering how hard it can be this time of year, trying to piece everything together for the holidays... It means a lot to be able to get this." The LVMPD Foundation's holiday initiatives, which also include Santa Cop and Shop with a Cop, continue to strengthen the bonds between officers and the neighborhoods they serve.
