The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) recently celebrated its Aquatic Volunteer Instructors (Aquatic VIPs) with an Appreciation Banquet on October 30th in Baton Rouge, acknowledging the dedication of these individuals who have volunteered a minimum of 15 hours educating others on fisheries and aquatic resources. As reported by LDWF, the ceremony not only recognized these volunteers but also featured an extended education presentation on the LDWF’s LA Creel program before the commencement of the celebratory event.
A key highlight of the evening was the presentation of various awards, among them the Lifetime Achievement, which celebrates the enduring commitment of the Aquatic VIPs to the program. The contributions by these instructors allow LDWF to significantly expand its reach in educating the public about the significance of responsible fisheries management. During the 2024-2025 fiscal year, these volunteers were instrumental and managed to collectively log over 3,700 hours, participating in 165 events and conducting more than 17,000 face-to-face interactions with the community.
The volunteer hours accrued by these individuals are a foundational component of the LDWF's operations, directly supporting the Department's mission and enabling the match of federal funds received through the Sport Fish Restoration fund. Significant efforts made by over 17,000 individuals at various events underscore the critical role these Aquatic VIPs play in fostering a culture of wise utilization of Louisiana’s fisheries resources, a crucial element in the sustainability of these ecosystems, as per the LDWF's website.
Among the awards presented during the banquet were categories such as Fintastic Performance, Outstanding Performance, Fishing Course Series Excellence, Aquatic VIP Rookie of the Year, and the Aquatic VIP of the Year. The celebration of these contributions was a testament to the invaluable role volunteers play in supporting LDWF's educational outreach programs. The Lifetime Achievement Awards, for instance, recognized milestones starting at 50 hours and extending up to 1,000 hours of service by Aquatic VIP participants. These awards serve to formally acknowledge the hours of effort dedicated by these individuals throughout their voluntary tenure.
