Yesterday marked a significant step forward for public transportation in Kaua‘i, as county officials, project partners, and local residents came together for a traditional blessing ceremony at the site of the upcoming Kaua‘i Bus Baseyard Expansion Project in Līhu‘e. The $6.4 million venture, sourced from County Capital Improvement Project funds and a Federal Transit Administration grant, aims to boost the operational capabilities and preparedness of The Kaua‘i Bus, particularly as the service moves toward a cleaner electric fleet.

Set to enhance The Kaua‘i Bus by introducing three additional maintenance bays to the existing ones—facilitating the service of new 35-foot battery electric buses—the expansion epitomizes the county's dedication to eco-friendly and efficient transportation; Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami enthused, "This project represents our continued investment in a cleaner, more efficient public transportation system for our island," according to the county's press release. Construction is slated to kick off later this year and is expected to wrap up toward the end of 2026, signifying a new era for public transport in Kaua‘i.

Among the planned improvements beyond the bay expansions are essential new power block chargers, complete with four dispensers that will serve as the charging backbone for the island's electric bus contingent. Meanwhile, upgrades in employee parking facilities are also in the pipeline, aiming to streamline operations and bolster safety measures for the transit system's staff. As Celia Mahikoa, Executive on Transportation, underscored, "This expansion strengthens our foundation for the future of public transportation on Kaua‘i." Mahikoa also highlighted the positive impact this project would have on the daily functioning of The Kaua‘i Bus, as noted by the county's official website.

Integral to the project's inception and realization are numerous collaborators, among them the Federal Transit Administration, the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation—specifically its Planning Office under Director Ed Sniffen—and various county departments, which include Finance, the County Attorney’s Office, Planning, Parks and Recreation, and Public Works. The expansion is a collective effort symbolizing a forward-thinking approach to transit, with professionals such as Marc Ventura, Architect, and Bill Bow, Engineer, contributing their expertise alongside PBR Hawai‘i and Shioi Construction, which have been mentioned as spearheads in community outreach, environmental assessment, and as the project’s general contractor, respectively. "Mahalo to all our partners who helped make this project a reality," Mayor Kawakami remarked, as reported by the county's official website.
