An 18-year-old college student from Long Island, Emily Finn, was fatally shot by her 17-year-old ex-boyfriend inside his Nesconset home just weeks after their breakup, authorities report. The ex-boyfriend, whom police have not named, then shot himself in the face and survived, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. yesterday. Responding to the scene, police discovered Finn dead. Her ex-boyfriend was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical but stable condition and is expected to face second-degree murder charges, The New York Post reported. The shooting unfolded after Finn returned some belongings to her ex-boyfriend's house, which followed their recent breakup, according to NBC New York.
The suspect's parents were at home during the incident, doing yardwork outside. After the shots were fired, the father called 911 immediately, detailed in NBC New York. Suffolk Police Det. Lt. Kevin Beyrer stated, "From what we're hearing, he took the breakup very hard." The victim's father, overcome with emotion upon arriving at the crime scene, required medical treatment.
There was no known "domestic history" between the teens, nor a history of 911 calls involving Finn or the gunman at the Nesconset residence. Neighbors expressed shock and sadness over the tragedy that struck close to home, especially on the eve of Thanksgiving. One resident described the suspect's family as a "great, typical community-involved family," and lamented how "multiple families will be destroyed by this," as was conveyed to The New York Post.
