An 80-year-old Long Island man, Peter Morris, was killed after being struck by a stolen car as he approached his vehicle near Woodward Parkway Elementary School in South Farmingdale. The incident occurred around 11:40 a.m. last Friday, according to ABC7NY. The stolen 2013 Nissan involved was driven by 24-year-old Randy Colon. Morris was a Vietnam War veteran.
After the collision, Colon attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by police near the scene. As per the New York Post, Morris had just attended a veterans’ commemoration event at the elementary school with his granddaughter. Colon is facing charges including second-degree manslaughter and leaving the scene of an incident resulting in death, among others.
Following the collision, Morris was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Morris was remembered for his outgoing personality and storytelling. His family noted that he had lost his wife five months earlier.
“I’ve been living here for 50 years, and this is the worst accident I’ve ever seen,” witness Tony Ferrara told the New York Post. Another witness, Katrina Innamorato, noted concern over the location near an elementary school with children nearby. Randy Colon remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court again on Wednesday.
