A young Los Angeles man has been given a cumulative prison sentence exceeding four years for his involvement in human trafficking activities along the notorious Figueroa Corridor, a case that underlines the ongoing challenges the city faces in combating such crimes, according to official statements from the district attorney’s office.
Fabian Gilbert, 21, was handed a 16-month state prison term last Friday; this punishment will run consecutively to a separate three-year sentence linked to a February 2024 carjacking incident, displaying the individual's pattern of criminal behaviour over the past years, the office of District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman confirmed, Hochman emphasized in his office's commitment to eradicating the scourge of human trafficking—a concern that has escalated into what he described as a multi-billion-dollar form of modern-day slavery.
Gilbert's conviction stemmed from a no-contest plea to one felony count of pandering by encouraging another person to prostitute, an incident that took place last December after police officers observed him trying to coerce a woman into sex work on Figueroa Street near 104th Street with aggressive demands, which led to his arrest on December 27, 2024.
Hochman has voiced his strategy to tackle the “human trafficking explosion,” includes prosecuting human traffickers and pimps, the "Johns" who pay for sex services, and assisting sex workers with counseling resources, "This sentence demonstrates my office’s commitment to do everything possible to eradicate human trafficking, a multi-billion-dollar business that is essentially modern-day slavery," Hochman stated reflecting a comprehensive approach needed to address the complex issue, according to the District Attorney’s press release.
The case against Gilbert, identified as 24CMCF02114, was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Destiny Ramsey and investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department, concluding with the recent sentence that serves as both punishment and a public statement of the judicial system's intolerance for such exploitative crimes.
