Drivers navigating I-215 in Utah are in for a shift in their commute as the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has recently announced a major change in traffic pattern, moving all vehicles onto the northbound side between State Route 201 and just north of I-80, according to a UDOT update. This adjustment is part of the I-215 West Improved project, aiming to increase efficiency in the reconstruction of the southbound freeway and facilitating the preparation for the rehabilitation of nine out of 18 bridges set for completion by the summer of 2027.
Due to this new development, motorists should be prepared for reduced lane widths and evolving traffic formations during the construction period, they should also keep in mind that these construction schedules are not set in stone as they heavily depend on weather conditions and might see changes; UDOT advises drivers to stay vigilant, abide by the signage, and when possible, to employ the zipper merge technique in order to alleviate congestion and minimize delays at points of lane closure.
UDOT Project Manager John Montoya emphasized the significance of this move, stating, "This shift is more than just a traffic change," Montoya told UDOT communications, "It’s what allows us to move into the heart of construction. Crews can now focus all their efforts on rebuilding one side of the freeway so we can deliver smoother pavement and stronger bridges for drivers sooner."
To stay updated with the latest in travel restrictions and construction updates, drivers are encouraged to check the UDOT Traffic website or download the free UDOT Traffic app – available for both iPhone and Android – UDOT provides constant updates on the project via their various social media platforms as well, including X, Facebook, and Instagram
