The sequence of events that transpired on a bustling Newnan shopping center parking lot led to an altercation between a man and law enforcement, subsequently resulting in the man being shot by an officer. The incident occurred after a 911 hang-up call led officers to 997 Bullsboro Drive, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta; upon arrival, they encountered 29-year-old Sonny Francis Conto of Glassboro, New Jersey, who was engaged in a heated exchange with a semi-truck driver.
Efforts to defuse the situation proved challenging, Conto refused to disembark from the vehicle steps, leading to a physical struggle after he summoned his dog from a nearby van and reached for an officer's firearm. During the ongoing confrontation, a second officer, fearing for the safety of all those involved, discharged their weapon, striking Conto in the arm - subsequently he attempted to flee but was swiftly apprehended and provided medical attention, as detailed by Atlanta News First.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Conto, whose injuries were deemed non-life-threatening, was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta; parallel to this event, an officer incurred non-life-threatening injuries as well and received care at a local hospital. Despite the chaotic scene, described by witness and pecan seller Bob Slay as unprecedented in his experience, normalcy was relatively restored as Slay beheld officers and a K-9 subdue Conto, quickly applying tourniquets to his wound, FOX 5 Atlanta recounts.
Looking ahead, Conto will face charges including obstruction and attempted removal of a firearm from a public official, and will be booked into the Coweta County Jail once his condition permits. This represents both the immediate consequences of his actions and the commencement of a broader investigative process by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to parse out the various factors at play in this incident.
