The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has arrested a suspect in the death of a man in east Charlotte. Marcos Antonio Perez-Vasquez, 30, has been charged with the murder of 54-year-old Thomas Montague Carter. WBTV reports that the victim was found last Saturday along Central Avenue near Eastcrest Drive. The case was initially classified as a death investigation but was later determined to be a homicide.
WCCB Charlotte states that Carter’s body was found with head trauma in bushes located between a gas station and a strip mall. Perez-Vasquez was arrested on Thursday after detectives charged him in connection with Carter’s death.
After his arrest by officers from CMPD's Eastway Division, Perez-Vasquez was interviewed by detectives at the Law Enforcement Center. WCNC indicates that he was subsequently transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. Perez-Vasquez, charged with first-degree murder, was denied bond during his court appearance yesterday. His next court date is scheduled for Nov. 21.
Authorities continue to gather information as the investigation progresses. They are asking anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward. Court documents indicate that Carter’s head injuries suggest an intent to cause fatal harm. Individuals with information can call 704-432-8477.
