Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. has sentenced 29-year-old Rodney Johnson to 25 years to life in state prison for the murder of his sister, Shayla Johnson. The crime, occurring within the confines of their East Harlem home at the NYCHA’s Lincoln Houses, was a brutal family tragedy that ended with the young woman's death in July 2023, according to the press release Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

"Rodney Johnson viciously and repeatedly stabbed his own sister in a deadly act of violence in their home," District Attorney Bragg said in a statement about the chilling event that Shayla's own mother witnessed. The assault persisted in the mother's bedroom, where Shayla sought refuge. Ultimately, the young woman became unresponsive, and Rodney fled the scene. On May 27, Johnson pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, a guilty plea that resolved the legal proceedings without drawing them out into a trial that could have proved even more traumatic for the family left to mourn Shayla, as reported also by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

Court testimony revealed that the conflict between Rodney and Shayla escalated to a deadly confrontation when Rodney followed her into the bathroom early one morning and launched the attack. According to prosecutors, Shayla called out for her mother’s help as the assault continued in the bedroom. Their mother, who witnessed the incident, attempted to intervene and contacted 911. Responding officers from the NYPD arrested Rodney near the scene, while FDNY medical personnel tried to revive Shayla, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Investigators recovered a bloody knife from the apartment, evidence that highlighted the severity of the attack. Support from the NYPD — including Detectives Daniel Velasquez and Patrick McClintock, Officers Katherine Rodriguez, Marcos Rodriguez, Abdul Sikder, Edward Westervelt, and Elizabeth Rosario — along with members of PSA 5 and the 25th Precinct Detective Squad, was instrumental in building the case. FDNY RMT Kenny Yu and his team responded to the scene and attempted to resuscitate the victim, though their efforts were unsuccessful. Their actions, however, became an important part of the subsequent legal proceedings. The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Amy Hare and Katherine Coulson, under the supervision of Assistant D.A. Robert Ferrari and Executive Assistant D.A. Lisa DelPizzo, according to a press release from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
