What police say
According to KCRA, officers responded after reports of gunfire in the Kayak Alley area and located the victim at the scene. The station reports the man was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and that investigators were on scene collecting evidence into the night.
Downtown safety history
Downtown Sacramento has seen high-profile gun violence in recent years, including an April 2022 mass shooting that killed six people and wounded more than a dozen; surveillance video from that night showed people running through Kayak Alley as shots rang out. That deadly episode intensified scrutiny of safety around K Street and nearby alleyways, according to KCRA.
Other recent incidents near the alley
Police also investigated an early-morning shooting in Kayak Alley behind Faces Nightclub this past August, when officers reported evidence of gunfire though no victims were immediately identified, according to a police media release covered by Public Safety News. The recurrence of shootings in and around alleyways that feed the entertainment district has kept residents and business owners focused on public-safety measures.
The investigation into Saturday’s shooting remains active and police have not released information about any suspects. Anyone with tips, video or other information is asked to contact the Sacramento Police Department non-emergency line at 916-808-5471, per the City of Sacramento, or call 911 in an emergency.
