The Mana Road fire on the slopes of Mauna Kea on Hawaiʻi Island is 65% contained after burning about 2,100 acres. The Hawaiʻi Fire Department said the fire is contained on the Hilo side of Mana Road and that no evacuations have been ordered, according to KHON2.
Officials said that no homes or buildings are currently at risk despite the large area affected by the fire. Firebreaks have been set up around the threatened zone to help crews target remaining hot spots, as reported by Big Island Now. The firefighting effort involves multiple agencies, including the Hawaiʻi Division of Forestry and Wildlife, the Hawaiʻi National Guard providing helicopter water drops, and several county and federal teams.
The Hawaiʻi Fire Department said that afternoon rain showers may help firefighting efforts at the Mana Road fire, but smoke continues to cause reduced visibility and air quality issues. “If smoke is present in your area, HFD advised you to stay indoors and close doors and windows,” the department said, as per KHON2. The Daniel K. Inouye Highway and Mauna Kea Access Road remain open, though drivers are urged to use caution. Light to moderate trade winds and possible isolated showers are expected as crews continue working toward containment.
