An indictment has been issued against Aaron Walker, 28, in a shocking case where an off-duty NYPD officer nearly met a grim fate on the subway tracks of the East Village. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. announced the charges, which include Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Attempted Assault in the First Degree and Assault in the Second Degree, as per an official statement from the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.
The incident in question unfolded on September 23, according to the indictment. The 24-year-old officer was walking along the platform at the 3rd Avenue L-train station near East 14th Street when Walker, unprovoked, allegedly threw the first punch. District Attorney Bragg described the assault as "a callous and frightening attack." After the initial hit, Walker is accused of grabbing the officer and shoving him onto the tracks of an approaching southbound L train. A "Good Samaritan" is credited with helping the officer escape the tracks in time, as reported by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.
The aftermath saw the officer taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries including bruising and pain to his head, neck, and arm. As for Walker, he allegedly attempted an escape by running to Union Square station and changing out of his clothes, discarding his sweatpants on the tracks, before being arrested while trying to board a northbound L train.
Handling the prosecution is Assistant D.A. Maureen Paparo, with a support team comprised of Erin Tierney, Lisa DelPizzo, Isabel Long, Caroline Schwanwede, and Julianna Bosrock. D.A. Bragg extended his gratitude to the NYPD for their efforts, particularly highlighting the 13th Precinct and the Transit Robbery Squad for their work on the case.
