Incumbent Alvin J. Bragg, Jr. has been re-elected as Manhattan District Attorney, leading his challengers by a wide margin. With nearly 74% of votes counted and 90% of ballots reported, according to AMNY, Bragg has secured another term as the borough’s top prosecutor, a position he has held since 2022.
In his victory speech, Bragg highlighted voter participation and his office’s work, including a reported 68% drop in shootings since 2021. “I love democracy. Folks turned out in historic numbers and they gave us the opportunity to serve again the best part of the best city in the world,” Bragg said, as per AMNY. His office has focused on precision prosecutions and community investments, which he noted have contributed to the reduction in violent incidents.
Bragg’s re-election reinforces his position in New York’s legal landscape. When he first assumed office as Manhattan’s first Black district attorney, succeeding Cyrus Vance Jr., Bragg brought experience as both a federal prosecutor and a civil rights attorney. As reported by PIX11, he is the fourth elected district attorney in the borough over the past 80 years.
Gun violence, mental health, and subway safety were key points of Bragg’s campaign. Bragg addressed his office’s policy on not prosecuting certain low-level crimes and highlighted investments in mental health initiatives. His policies, including support for closing Rikers Island, have received public attention, and his re-election continues his tenure as Manhattan District Attorney.
On the electoral front, Bragg led his opponents by a wide margin, with Republican Maud Maron, a public defender, receiving 20.6% of the vote and independent Diana Florence earning 5.5%. Across the East River, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez won a third term unopposed, continuing his tenure in Brooklyn’s legal system.
