A Manhattan man is facing second-degree murder charges for fatally stabbing his 80-year-old neighbor. Alon Riabichev, 45, told a 911 operator that he had a “psychotic break” before the early-morning attack on Lev Vayner in Vayner’s Washington Heights residence, according to a criminal complaint reported by Gothamist.
Riabichev, who had moved in with Vayner only days before the incident following his eviction by his mother, was apprehended at the scene by NYPD officers, he sat "further away" inside the apartment while the first responders found Vayner "covered in blood and laying unresponsive on the floor," an NYPD officer responding to the scene reported data shows homicides and felony assaults in the precinct were down from the previous year, with only two homicides noted through Nov. 23, a noticeable decrease from six by the same date in 2024, according to Gothamist.
Riabichev, with a history of at least seven arrests over theft of services as reported by sources, found himself homeless after his mother removed him from her home, a neighbor described Riabichev's lifestyle as reckless which included drinking and probable drug use which caused strains that led to his eviction, Riabichev was on the street with nowhere to go and Mr. Vayner took pity, the tragic sequence of events unfolded culminating in Vayner's death, this account was provided by a neighbor who did not wish to be identified speaking to the New York Post.
Vayner, recalled by neighbor Juanita Abreu as "very generous" and someone who "tried to help," succumbed to multiple stab wounds, which were confirmed by emergency medical workers, the dispute between the roommates that led to the stabbing had not been immediately clarified, and an investigation is underway, Riabichev is also charged with criminal possession of a weapon, another resident expressed to the New York Post their disbelief, noting the lack of any commotion before the arrival of police.
As Riabichev awaits his next court appearance, the details of what led to the fatal encounter remain under investigation by local authorities.
