A serious incident on Highway 285 has led to a manhunt for the suspect in an alleged road rage case. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies arrived at the scene on Highway 285 and Settlers Drive on Tuesday evening following a single-vehicle crash of a black SUV. The situation escalated when a passenger was found with a gunshot wound to the head, prompting an investigation into what is now believed to be an act of road rage, 9News reports.
The passenger underwent emergency surgery and, as per the latest updates, remains in critical but stable condition. The sheriff's spokesperson, Jacki Kelley, stated that after piecing together witness accounts, it was determined shots had been fired from a second vehicle described as a light-colored Subaru. These shots caused the SUV to crash and resulted in the passenger's injury, Kelley said. Meanwhile, the highway was closed for an extended period as deputies worked to secure what was described as a "large and complex crime scene," KKTV adds.
Local authorities have reached out to the community in search of additional information, urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or possesses dash camera footage from the area of Highway 285, near Sourdough Drive, around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, to come forward. This could be crucial in tracing the suspect’s whereabouts and bringing closure to the case.
So far, details about the suspect or their vehicle have been scant, with information largely reliant on eye-witness testimony and potential dashcam evidence of the incident or its lead-up. "The shooting happened on the roadway," Kelley mentioned, according to CBS News Colorado.
