A local Marin County man, Denni Rodas Diaz, has been sentenced to jail time and probation following a conviction for auto insurance fraud. Rodas Diaz, 33, entered a guilty plea to two felony charges under Penal Code section 550(a)(4), which deals with knowingly filing a false insurance claim, according to a statement from the Marin County District Attorney's Office.

The case, which emerged following a meticulous investigation by an insurance company, revealed that between 2021 and 2023, Rodas Diaz had repeatedly filed claims for pre-existing vehicle damage and orchestrated sham accidents to deceive the insurer. Rodas Diaz, in collaboration with two associates, had managed to create a facade of credibility, only to be undone by photographic proof that exposed the repetitive damage across supposed separate incidents. The conviction arrived on Wednesday, following the earlier filing of charges on February 6.

In addition to 180 days in county jail, Rodas Diaz is mandated to complete 40 hours of community service and participate in a theft awareness class during his two-year probation period. Failure to adhere to the terms could result in an elevated sentence of up to five years in prison. Rodas Diaz is scheduled to be remanded on December 3 to serve his jail time. The case against his co-conspirators also unfolded, with Ronald Morales, 44, a former roommate of Rodas Diaz, pleading guilty to a felony charge and receiving a sentence of probation, jail time, community service, and a monetary fine. Conversely, the third accomplice is still at large following a failure to appear in court, prompting an active warrant for his arrest.
