Woodland Hills residents and commuters faced unexpected disruptions on Monday when a water main break led to a massive sinkhole near El Camino Real Charter High School. As reported by KTLA, the incident was detected around 11 a.m. at the intersection of Valley Circle Boulevard and Mariano Street, carving out a 30-foot-wide chasm and flooding the streets. Officials were forced to shut down Valley Circle in both directions from Burbank to Canzonet without a defined timeframe for reopening.
Further details provided by ABC7 indicated that a six-inch cast iron pipe was the source of the issue, causing the street to collapse after the water initially began to flood the intersection. Repair crews were quickly dispatched to the site to begin fixing the sinkhole, but uncertainty lingered as to when they might be able to conclusively restore traffic flow.
Despite the potential danger posed by the sinkhole, the Los Angeles Fire Department has confirmed that there were no injuries as a result of the incident. This was alongside reports from MyNewsLA, which acknowledged the involvement of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power crews who were on scene to investigate and address the repairs. The public was advised to avoid the area and to seek alternative routes while the necessary work was being carried out.
