The Matthews Police Department has established the MPD Mindfulness Room, a space for officers to manage stress. A recent social media post by the department states that the room is intended to provide officers with a quiet area to unwind and process the demands of their daily work.
The newly established room is equipped with massage chairs, a television, and can be used by staff for up to 15 minutes with supervisor approval. The amenities, including the massage chairs, were donated by Quality Data Systems, Inc., a contribution publicly acknowledged by the department. Matthews Police Chief James Avens noted the department’s focus on mental health in a Facebook post, stating, "We’re finally making some headway in instilling the importance of their mental health."
Chief Avens supports the initiative, which follows the 21st Century Policing Model focusing on helping the community during mental health crises and supporting officer wellness.
