Two MBTA Green Line operators were hospitalized after more than 100 feet of overhead catenary wire caught fire and fell onto a train at the Boston College Yard. The incident occurred last night and disrupted B Line service for several hours, according to NBC Boston.
Emergency crews, including the Boston Fire Department and transit police, responded around 5 p.m. The fire was extinguished after about 30 minutes. The two operators were taken to the hospital for smoke-related injuries. Passengers had already exited the train before the fire, The Heights reported.
Power was shut off between the Boston College and Babcock Street stops as a safety measure. Shuttle buses operated while emergency teams assessed the damage. The MBTA later restored regular rail service that night.
Witnesses described the event to The Heights, recalling the sound and scale of the emergency response. Adriana Martinez, an employee at Crazy Dough’s Pizza, and Garrett MacKenzie, who saw the aftermath, both noted the large number of emergency vehicles on scene.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the MBTA has not released updates on the operators’ conditions.
