As the city prepares to honor its veterans, Mecklenburg County offices and services are set to observe a day of closure next Tuesday for Veterans Day. All units within the Department of Social Services, including Child, Family, and Adult Services, and the Departments of Community Resources, as well as other key county offices, will not be open to the public.
This means that residents will need to plan ahead for any engagements with the Valerie C. Woodard Community Resource Center, Ella B. Scarborough Community Resource Center, Public Health, Elections Office, Tax Collector, County Assessor’s Office, and Register of Deeds Office, which will all to be closed on the holiday, as the county announced. Also on the list of closures are the Land Use and Environmental Services Agency Offices and Mecklenburg County Solid Waste Centers. However, for those looking to spend the day outdoors, all parks and nature preserves under the purview of the Park and Recreation department will remain open, though all recreation and senior centers, nature centers, seasonal pools, spraygrounds, and beaches will close.
While routine services are paused, the Department of Social Services has assured the community that hotlines to report suspected abuse or neglect will continue to operate, as will be expected, on a 24/7 basis. "To report abuse of seniors or the disabled, call 704-336-CARE (2273). To report abuse, neglect or human trafficking of children, call 980-31-HELPS (43577)," the department noted, ensuring that vital services remain accessible.
For those whose trash pick-up might be affected, it's important to check with local residential collection services as Mecklenburg County towns and the City of Charlotte may provide service. Updates and specifics will be available on the collectors’ respective websites, as the announcement from the county suggests. Additionally, CharMeck 311 will operate on a modified schedule, offering limited services. Residents can still access automated services for reporting water, sewer, storm water, and animal issues. For emergencies, citizens are to still make contact with 911 for immediate assistance.
All details regarding the Veterans Day closings and the operation of county services can be found on the Mecklenburg County's official website.
