In recent municipal developments, the Memphis City Council has confirmed the appointment of Melvin Jamerson to the position of Director of General Services and Colin D. Burress as the new Fire Chief for the City of Memphis, as reported by the City of Memphis official website. Jamerson, who has more than a quarter-century of service to the city, was selected for the role by Mayor Paul Young and has been functioning in an interim capacity since January 2024.
"Melvin Jamerson represents the best of public service,” stated Mayor Young, in a statement obtained by the City of Memphis official website. Jamerson's experience encompasses significant facility and infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the city's departments to better serve residents. His confirmation signals a commitment to continued innovation and efficient operations within Memphis' General Services, which handles city facilities, fleet, and infrastructure management.
With an educational background that includes a Bachelor of Science in Business from Arkansas State University and several professional development programs, Jamerson is poised to maintain his focus on sustainability and modernization. His career has been marked by tailored leadership in city development and administration.
On the emergency services front, Burress's confirmation as Fire Chief fills the vacancy created by the retirement of previous Fire Services Director Gina Y. Sweat. Having been a member of the Memphis Fire Department since September 1998 and ascending through various ranks, his experience comprehensively covers fire suppression, special operations, and emergency management.
"I’m honored to step up as Fire Chief for the City of Memphis,” Chief Burress told the City of Memphis official website. He has vowed to uphold the department's legacy of courage, compassion, and service, ensuring that the city remains under the safeguard of dedicated and professional emergency services. Chief Burress holds degrees from both LeMoyne-Owen College and the University of Arkansas, and is an alumnus of prestigious institutions including the Naval Postgraduate School and the National Fire Academy.
Burress’s commitment extends beyond his professional duties. As a leader in the community, he has actively participated in initiatives like the Operation Feed Campaign and the State Fire Marshal’s Office Smoke Detector Program, reflecting the broader responsibilities of civil service and his determination to support and protect the Memphis community in multiple capacities.
