A Milwaukee County judge has deemed Lauren Spors, 29, unfit to face trial for the alleged murder of her mother, Carrie Zettel. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Spors, who is battling schizoaffective disorder, was charged with first-degree intentional homicide but was found unable to understand court procedures or to actively help in her own defense.

Court records revealed on Friday that Spors is to be admitted to the Department of Health and Family Services for institutional care in an effort to possibly restore her competence. However, in the meantime, she was placed under the custody of the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office for transportation. WeAreGreenBay.com reports that her case has been suspended and is due for a follow-up on February 27, 2026, when a doctor's report is scheduled for review.

Spors has previously been found incompetent in connection with five other cases since 2018, dealing with battery, domestic abuse, and theft. This record, as Fox6Now notes, includes multiple violations of a restraining order Zettel obtained against her daughter over concerns about her contributions to Spors' father's death. Despite alleged violations, Spors' mental state often deteriorated post-release from treatment.

Zettel had previously expressed worries regarding her daughter's mental health and its potential hazards. In the days leading to the tragic incident, Spors was transported to Froedtert Hospital for assessment and was released the following day, Oct. 11, only to engage with law enforcement three separate times within 24 hours. "On the third and final dispatch, Zettel told the dispatcher that Spors was banging on her window around 3:30 a.m.," as per a report by Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

As the proceedings are deferred pending Spors' potential rehabilitation, the complexities surrounding mental health and criminal justice system interactions take center stage in another harrowing family tragedy in Milwaukee.
