In the recent Minnetonka municipal election held on November 4, the city saw an uptick in voter participation, with approximately a third of eligible voters turning out to cast their ballots. As reflected in the official figures released by the City of Minnetonka, this year's turnout amounted to 33.04 percent, making it the second-highest since 1985. The record for municipal election participation still stands from 2001, when 33.75 percent of voters made their voices heard.
Voting trends in Minnetonka suggest a steady increase in the use of absentee ballots, as documented in the recent election. According to official data, there were 3,868 absentee ballots counted this year, compared to 3,241 in the 2023 election. This rise reflects a continuing shift in voter preferences for how they engage with the democratic process.
The total number of ballots cast in the 2025 Minnetonka municipal election came to 13,272, a figure that represents a considerable increase over past elections. For perspective on the growth of voter engagement in the city, the 2019 municipal election, which selected Ward councilmembers, culminated in only 5,695 total votes, a mere 15.17 percent voter turnout. The year 2021 showed a marked improvement during the mayoral and at-large councilmembers' elections with 28.46 percent turnout, representing 11,350 voters who took part in electing their local government leaders.
This latest surge in participation, particularly through absentee voting, underscores a broader trend as Minnetonka residents increasingly take advantage of mail-in voting options. While Election Day remains a staple for many, the convenience of casting a ballot from the comfort of one's home appears to be an appealing option for a growing segment of the population.
