A recent recall notice is compelling some peach lovers to check their fruit bowls. Moonlight Companies has issued a recall for yellow and white peaches due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination, an organism that can cause serious infections, particularly in vulnerable individuals. The Hawai‘i Department of Health Food and Drug Branch alerted residents to the recall, which concerns products distributed nationwide from Sept. 16, to Oct. 29. These peaches made their way to various retailers including Costco, Target, and Whole Foods.
The specific peaches in question were sold either as individual fruits with PLU stickers or as multipacks, though products labeled “Washington” and/or “Organic” are not included in this recall. Consumers are advised to thoroughly check the peaches they have purchased during this period. The recalled products may contain Listeria, which has been found in the packing facility and can swiftly cause listeriosis, a condition with symptoms that range from fever and muscle aches to more severe complications like miscarriages and stillbirths, according to the Hawai‘i Department of Health.
While no reported illnesses have been associated with the recall so far, it should be taken seriously. Especially since listeriosis symptoms can take up to two months to appear after consumption of contaminated food. The FDB advises anyone who has eaten the recalled peaches and is showing symptoms to contact their healthcare provider immediately. Infection can generally be treated with antibiotics, especially if caught early. Consumers have been urged by the FDB to dispose of the product safely and ensure sanitation of any surfaces that may have been in contact with the recalled peaches, as per the Hawai‘i Department of Health.
Moonlight Companies is available for questions about refunds at their hotline, and the FDB has provided representative photographs of the packaging and PLU stickers for identification. Consumers are to seal the product in a zip-top plastic bag before disposal and are encouraged to sanitize their hands and all potentially contaminated areas. Representative photographs can aid in this process and are accessible on the Hawai‘i Department of Health website.
While this recall may cause some disruption to consumers and retailers alike, the quick identification and action to prevent potential health issues is a critical measure. As details unfold, further updates can be expected to be made available to the public.
