
A Nash Correctional Institution officer has been arrested on multiple charges related to smuggling drugs into the prison, as reported by the Nash County Sheriff's Office. The officer, identified as 37-year-old Shanese Shante Sanders, was taken into custody after approximately 98 grams of synthetic cannabinoid K2 and 19 grams of Suboxone were found in her vehicle. CBS 17 reported that the narcotics were allegedly intended to be distributed to an inmate at the facility.
Sanders, who is from Enfield, was charged with possession with intent to sell/deliver a synthetic cannabinoid and a Schedule III controlled substance, among other offenses, Deputies emphasized that intercepting these drugs is crucial for reducing the risks of overdoses and violence within prisons an issue that has surged in recent years, according to statements made in the press release obtained by WITN.
The correctional staff initially flagged the suspicion that led to the investigation and subsequent arrest of Sanders on the morning of November 26. The Nash County Sheriff's Office Narcotics Division acted on the tip, with deputies securing the drugs after a probable cause search of the accused's car, this sequence of events was detailed in a piece by The NC Beat. Court documents reveal that Sanders likely conspired with Antonio Marquese Geter, an inmate serving a long sentence for crimes dating back to 2004.
Following her arrest, Sanders posted a $70,000 bond and was released, she is scheduled for a court appearance on the following Monday.
