The Nashville Fire Department has bolstered its force with the addition of 52 new firefighters, who were welcomed into the fold during a graduation ceremony held at Madison Church of Christ yesterday. The event was graced by the presence of NFD Director Chief William Swann and Mayor Freddie O’Connell, who presented certificates of completion to each of the graduates, as per the Nashville Fire Department.
A unique aspect of this graduating class, known as Battalion 91, is the inclusion of four Metro Nashville Police Officers, who have now become licensed EMTs after completing the NFD's EMS Training. These officers, one sergeant and three detectives, will return to the MNPD, equipped with new skills to serve the community. The celebration continued as Deputy Director and Chief Tim Henderson, along with Chief Training Officer Moses Jefferies IV, presented the official badges to the new fire service members.
Battalion 91 faced a grueling curriculum to earn their graduation, completing over 1,000 hours of both classroom and practical training. The regimen included live-fire exercises, swift-water rescues, and mastering high-angle rescue techniques. "Every one of our recruits commit to a physical and educational challenge unlike any other they have ever experienced," Director Chief Swann extolled, per the Nashville Fire Department. "Battalion 91 took on the challenge and Friday we celebrate them accomplishing this initial goal."
High achievers within the group were distinguished: Isaiah Kiefer was named Valedictorian for the Fire Suppression training program, achieving an impressive 98.7% GPA. In comparison, Detective Gary Anderson led the EMS Training as Valedictorian with a 94% GPA. Robert Bowman Jr. was recognized for the "Relentless Effort" behind his noteworthy physical transformation, and Recruit Ardonus Scruggs was honored with The Leadership Award for his ability to guide and inspire the group towards common goals.
