Nassau County Police Officer Michael Hyland has been released from the hospital after spending 29 days in the ICU. According to ABC7NY, Hyland was seriously injured on October 6 while escorting a funeral procession when his motorcycle was hit by a pickup truck. His release from Stony Brook University Hospital was met with applause, marking his recovery after being on life support.
Dr. James Vosswinkel, a trauma surgeon at Stony Brook University Hospital, described Officer Hyland’s injuries as severe, including a punctured lung, broken vertebrae, a broken femur, and a separation of the spine from the skull. As per Hudson Valley News12, Dr. Vosswinkel said these injuries could have been fatal under worse circumstances.
Officer Hyland’s next step is recovery at an inpatient rehab center, where he will undergo physical and occupational therapy. He expressed gratitude despite the challenges he has faced. No charges have been filed in connection with the accident.
