In late November, a significant crackdown on drug and violent crime in New Orleans culminated in seven arrests and multiple seizures. The multi-agency operation, dubbed "Operation Traffic Control," was a collaborative effort involving the LSP - Troop NOLA, the LSP Bureau of Investigations - New Orleans Field Office assigned to the HIDTA Task Force, the FBI, the NOPD, and the VCAIT, as reported by the Louisiana State Police.
The operation stemmed from a focus on a spate of violent crimes, which included two homicides, occurring within two weeks near 2825 Philip Street. Law enforcement agencies utilized a combination of surveillance operations, targeted traffic stops, and the support from Project NOLA to disrupt the criminal activities. According to the Louisiana State Police, on Wednesday, November 19, this concerted approach led to the arrest of six individuals, with another suspect apprehended the subsequent day.
Among the seizures were eight firearms, two reported as stolen, nearly $12,000 in cash, 38 grams of cocaine, 34 grams of fentanyl, and drug paraphernalia associated with the distribution of narcotics. The operation's efforts indicate a significant impact on local drug trafficking operations, with law enforcement noting the recovery of various controlled substances during the arrests.
The arrested individuals face various charges, including possession of firearms by convicted felons, possession of drugs, and in some cases, existing warrants for serious offenses such as attempted murder and armed robbery. Notably, one of the apprehended, James Marcelin, at 33 years old, was found with a myriad of charges, including possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number and dealing in multiple controlled substances. The detailed breakdown of charges for each individual was meticulously documented on the Louisiana State Police website. All suspects were booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center.
The case remains under continuing investigation, with law enforcement reiterating its commitment to curbing illegal drug activity in the community. They encourage anyone with pertinent information to come forward and report anonymously through the Louisiana State Police online system or via the LSP Fusion Center Hotline. Operation Traffic Control offers a snapshot of relentless efforts to cleanse the streets of New Orleans from the plague of drugs and related violent crimes, signaling an ongoing battle against entities sowing seeds of chaos in the community.
