The City of New Orleans has taken control of its streetlight operations, switching from contracted services to an in-house management approach that has demonstrated both efficiency gains and cost savings. According to an official announcement by the City's Department of Public Works, the move comes with the completion of staff training on a new Asset Management System, allowing for real-time monitoring and more streamlined processes.

Since the switch on September 19, the DPW has regained direct oversight of over 51,000 streetlights in the city, which resulted in improved service reliability and more direct control over expenditures. This change means, now city workers can immediately track lighting conditions, schedule maintenance, and report on inspections—not relying on external contractors who previously handled these tasks. Although there was a brief pause in repairs due to initial funding hurdles, the improvement in the management workflow resumed quickly after DPW contractors were brought up to speed on the new system in October.

One of the primary benefits highlighted in the shift is the use of digitized work orders and inspection reports. The new system allows the city to automatically schedule and verify repair work, which has culminated in significant activity in just a few months. "Inspectors have investigated 1,294 outage requests, identified 1,529 total outages, and completed nearly 800 maintenance repairs, all coordinated through the City’s automated system," reports the City of New Orleans announcement.

The improvements in infrastructure management have set the stage for the 2026 Streetlight Master Plan. The upcoming plan is expected to address current service gaps, guide citywide upgrades to the lighting system, and establish options for sustainable funding. It will also focus on enhancing nighttime visibility and public safety, while tackling challenges such as ensuring equitable service across all neighborhoods.
