The National Weather Service in New Orleans has issued a Dense Fog Advisory early this Monday morning, alerting locals and commuters to the limited visibility they may face on the roads. The advisory, which remains in effect until 9 AM CST, details that visibilities could drop to a quarter mile or less due to dense fog across portions of southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi. In areas with active or smoldering fires, the visibility may further be reduced to near zero, making driving conditions particularly hazardous, according to the NWS.
In addition to the fog advisory, New Orleans residents can expect the mist to clear up later in the morning, giving way to a partly sunny day with a high near 78 degrees, according to the NWS forecast. Calm winds are likely to become east around 5 mph in the afternoon. Tonight, the skies are predicted to stay partly cloudy, with a low settling around 63 degrees, accompanied by a southeast wind around 5 mph.
The rest of the week looks to follow a similar pattern, with sunny skies and daytime highs nearing 79 degrees through Thursday. Evenings will carry on to be partly cloudy, with lows consistently around 63 degrees and calm southeast winds. However, the weather shifts slightly as the week comes to a close with a 40 percent chance of showers after midnight on Thursday, leading into a weekend chance of showers and thunderstorms.
For drivers out early this morning, the Dense Fog Advisory advises to "If driving, slow down, use your low beam headlights, and leave plenty of distance ahead of you." The impact of the fog could significantly affect the morning commute, and exercising precaution should be a priority. As for the upcoming weather fluctuations, the involvement of higher chances of rain towards the end of the week might once again alter driving conditions and plans for outdoor activities. It is advisable for residents to keep abreast of weather updates as the week progresses.
