Hollygrove Stabbing Sends Three To Hospital, No Suspect Identified Yet

Three people were hospitalized Wednesday after an apparent stabbing on the 3700 block of South Carrollton Avenue in the Hollygrove area of New Orleans, according to police. Officers responded to the scene just before noon and described the incident as an aggravated battery by cutting.

All three victims were taken to an area hospital by EMS for treatment, according to the New Orleans Police Department, as reported by WDSU. Police have not released any information about a potential suspect, leaving the circumstances of the attack — including what led to it and how the victims are connected, if at all — unclear for now. Given the severity typically associated with stabbing injuries, victims of this kind of trauma in New Orleans are routinely transported to University Medical Center New Orleans, the region's only Level 1 Trauma Center staffed by emergency medicine teams from LSU Health and Tulane University, according to LCMC Health.

Where the Attack Happened

The 3700 block of South Carrollton Avenue sits in a mixed-use stretch of Uptown/Carrollton that includes retail spaces like Carrollton Central Plaza, near the border of Hollygrove and Gert Town, per CommercialSearch. The avenue functions as a key arterial and retail corridor for the 17th Ward. The block falls under NOPD's Second District, headquartered at 3401 Broadway Street in Gert Town, which serves the Uptown, Carrollton, Gert Town, and Hollygrove areas, according to the City of New Orleans.

Hollygrove itself is a residential neighborhood bounded by Palmetto Street to the north, Earhart Boulevard to the south, Leonidas Street to the east, and the Jefferson Parish line to the west, as defined by the City Planning Commission of New Orleans. The neighborhood originally developed from drained swampland in the 1920s.

A Pattern Along the Same Corridor

This is not the first violent weapon-related incident to snarl South Carrollton Avenue this year. In June, NOPD Second District officers and SWAT teams responded to another aggravated battery along the avenue near Tulane Avenue that triggered street closures and a barricaded standoff, according to WWL-TV. That earlier incident underscored how the corridor, which stretches through multiple commercial and residential blocks between Mid-City and Carrollton, has repeatedly drawn major police responses.

Hoodline reported in May that despite citywide drops in violent crime, localized pockets of Hollygrove have continued to see violent events, including shootings and stabbings. Neighborhood advocates have repeatedly called for targeted, block-level intervention strategies to address these clusters, even as broader trends point downward.

Citywide Crime Trends Diverge From Local Reality

Overall violent crime in New Orleans dropped by 70 percent between 2022 and mid-2026, according to the Metropolitan Crime Commission, extending a multi-year citywide decline. The New Orleans Police Department has separately reported that overall crime statistics for 2025 fell for the third consecutive year, led by double-digit drops in homicides and nonfatal shootings.

Even so, isolated violent incidents persist across individual police districts, and Wednesday's stabbing adds to a string of violent episodes reported in and around Hollygrove this year, including a fatal shooting on Hollygrove Street in May and a fatal shooting in February. A separate stabbing in the adjacent Leonidas/Carrollton area in July also left investigators searching for a suspect.

Under Louisiana law, aggravated battery is defined as a battery committed with a dangerous weapon and is punishable by a fine of up to $5,000, imprisonment with or without hard labor for up to 10 years, or both, according to the Ambeau Law Firm. It is classified as a felony and a crime of violence under state law.
